Bourn Hall Day 2-168

Don’t delay - get tested!

Quite often, it’s only when conception doesn’t happen quite as quickly as we’d like, that the virility of sperm is questioned. So if you think there might be an issue with your sperm, getting your fertility tested is a logical first step.

Fertility testing needn’t be daunting. It can give you a broader understanding of your fertility potential and could mean that you are one step closer to becoming a parent. It can also give you peace of mind and, with all the information at your fingertips, help you make an informed decision about what to do next.

Sperm testing

A good (but not definitive) assessment of male fertility. It can expose a lot about sperm quality but not too much about how the sperm will interact with an egg. Sperm testing is relatively simple. A sample of semen is collected – via masturbation – either at home or in a private space at the clinic. The sample should be produced after 2–7 days of sexual abstinence, but no longer. We analyse the sperm for number, movement and shape. Any abnormality in one of these criteria could mean that fertility potential is reduced.

An option if the sperm count is low or if the sperm is failing to create good quality embryos. This method is commonly used in the in vitro fertilisation (IVF) process but, instead of the sperm and egg being brought together in a culture dish, a single sperm is injected directly into an egg.
