Happy birthday, Louise Joy Brown! 🎂Louise was the world’s first IVF baby, after her mum and dad, Lesley and John Brown, took part in the pioneering research conducted by Patrick Steptoe, Robert Edwards and Jean Purdy. Her mum went on to have a second round of IVF at Bourn Hall, which resulted in Louise’s sister, Natalie, being born.Louise has written a guest blog to coincide with her birthday for our website and pays tribute to the three pioneers who set up Bourn Hall after her birth. She said: “Being born as the world’s first IVF baby on 25 July 1978, in Oldham, has meant a lot of exciting, interesting and strange things have happened to me throughout my life.“Most recently, it was watching famous actors at the Bristol Old Vic re-enact my birth and raise a baby high in the air.“Read Louise’s blog here: moredetails.uk/3WAszaJ

We know that the pressure of balancing fertility treatment and work can be stressful and that many patients are worried that having treatment will impact their performance at work as well as their career prospects. Many people don’t know their rights or how to start a conversation with their employer about taking time off for appointments. To help our patients, we have teamed up with Fertility Network UK to facilitate its ‘Fertility in the Workplace’ initiative. This programme aims to inform employers about the ways they can support their staff experiencing fertility issues and manage the impacts in the workplace. It also provides resources and practical support to employees. We have been reviewing how we can offer more flexibility with appointments and schedules, so patients are more in control of how and when to tell their employer about their treatment. We have been sharing our journey with Fertility Network UK and together we are developing resources to help other clinics become more patient-centric. This is called the ‘Clinic Pledge’.Find out more here: moredetails.uk/3Wy7xcZ
